Dictionary.com Definition: a South Korean conglomerate, usually owned by a single family, based on authoritarian management and centralized decision making.
K-Drama Definition: a ridiculously rich, good looking man who had everything to offer the (usually poor) girl who he falls in love with except a perfect personality, which the girl usually changes anyway.
Just because their personalities are not "perfect," though, it does not mean that their personalities are horrible - most of the time. In fact, the best word to describe K-Drama chaebols is eccentric. Silly. Wacky. Weird, but utterly lovable.
Hyun Bin ("Secret Garden")
Blast to the past: Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin) in Secret Garden may be the origin of the rich, attractive, slightly strange and lovably eccentric chaebol character.
Wikipedia Description: Bossy, impertinent, and quite arrogant, the handsome CEO Kim Joo Won is used to wearing a million dollar training suit and being the smartest man in the room. He also has a bad habit of making sure everyone's lives revolve around him. This sharp and calculating man who was afraid of no one is floored when he meets Gil Ra Im. She's not an heiress with a good social status, and works as a stunt woman. In fact, he treats her like a nuisance. So why does he want to see her again and again?
Some of his legacies includes:
- "Is that your best? Are you sure?" - his main catchphrase.
- His famous, refreshingly-new romantic gestures, including the sit-up scene and the foam kiss.
- His wonderful, glorious and wacky outfit that fully encompasses Kim Joo Won's personality.
His fabulous blue tracksuit and adorable habit. |
Hyun Bin is definitely not the only eccentric but lovable chaebol; however, he is one of the most strange, most hilarious, and most charming of them all. Also, since I haven't watched all that many k-dramas, he's probably one of the only chaebols I know (except Cha Do Hyun from Kill Me, Heal Me, but he isn't eccentric), so that makes him the best chaebol.
