Doctor Stranger - The Quack Couple (Park Hoon x Oh Soo Hyun)

Park Hoon and Oh Soo Hyun, aka the Quack Couple, my first non-canon, k-drama OTP. Usually when I watch anything, I ship the main couple/the couple that are most likely to end up together, but that's not the case for Doctor Stranger. In this drama, Hoon ended up with Jae Hee, and Soo Hyun with Jae Joon. I do quite like the ship of Soo Hyun x Jae Joon, but they never connected as well as Soo Hyun and Hoon did.

The Heartbeat Theory (Ep. 7)

I guess I should speak of the most obvious reason to why I ship them. I knew almost straight away that Hoon and Jae Hee didn't look completely natural. There was always some sort of awkward situation, whether it was because Hoon had to kill Jae Hee's father to let her live (kidney surgery), Jae Hee switching to Jae Joon's surgery team so he couldn't do the President's surgery, or the fact that Cha Jin Soo was always threatening them and their relationship. It never fit. Plus, Jae Hee's actress couldn't do her role properly (I've liked her previous roles in other dramas, just not Jae Hee). Also, having Jae Hee admit near the end of the series that Hoon and Soo Hyun make each other laugh and comfortable, and that Hoon would pick Soo Hyun in the end was slaying any chance of me hoping she still had some dignity in her "exchange" with Hoon.

Another reason is the nickname "quack". Ever since they met, they've had a heated relationship (non-sexual). It all started when Hoon started and finished a surgery in Myeongwoo University Hospital without even being a doctor there. Hoon intimidated Soo Hyun by calling her a quack (another name for someone who doesn't take risks (also, hence the ship name)) as she felt like she wouldn't be able do a surgery, even though she's had practice at it and learned about it in her medical books. This, however, ended up with Hoon getting slapped across the face. But, Hoon has kept up the habit of calling her a quack ever since (he makes sure to call her "Doctor Oh" in front of patients though). Also, because of this nickname and a practical joke to make sure she was doing her job properly as a doctor, Hoon got kicked right in the groin just after he became a doctor at Myeongwoo.

Something that grew to make their relationship so strong was when they performed Soo Hyun's mother's surgery together. Even though she didn't survive the procedure, Soo Hyun was grateful towards him because Hoon didn't want to let her die, even with her being a terminal illness patient. He knew that if the mother had the surgery, she would have a 5% chance of surviving and living an even longer life. And that was a risk he was willing to take. After her passing, Soo Hyun broke down in a flood of tears (as most people would) and borrowed Hoon's chest and arms to cry on (also meaning they hugged). It was an emotional roller coaster for Soo Hyun and this led to her having a small crush on Hoon.

Small, but cute reason now. Soo Hyun told Hoon after a surgery that his hair wasn't appropriate for a doctor and that is was too scruffy. After a few episodes since that, he cut his hair to make it look better and more suitable.

The last reason I'll talk about (I have several more, but I can't go on for too long) is that Soo Hyun actually had the courage to tell her feelings to Hoon, unlike most third-wheel girls do. Soo Hyun had several problems when this happened (like her recent breakup with Jae Joon, finding out he was someone completely different, and having her non-biological father almost pass), she still did it anyway. Unfortunately, Hoon rejected her because he was in love with Jae Hee and he even admitted in the past that the two of them aren't meant to be. Soo Hyun still confessed in spite of her knowing all of this, and managed to overcome it afterwards. Obviously, Soo Hyun and Hoon were still friends after this (and some other crap as well), and their original relationship continued as usual.

As most people would be, I'm upset that Hoon chose Jae Hee instead of Soo Hyun because they are most perfect for each other, and make each other feel great, but that didn't happen. Doctor Stranger was all made on the basis of Hoon trying to find and get back Jae Hee, so it would have been unnatural if they didn't end up together, but my ship feels still haven't recovered.

Soo Hyun not knowing how to face Hoon when he comes back to the hospital after being fired (for the second time). Also, this is Hoon's new haircut (old one is in the gif above). (Ep. 17)

  1. I know right..I know this is an old post but I just finished watching Dr.Stranger, but you are completely right on this. Why build up the romance only to just stay unresolved? I think Hoon liked her a lot, I mean his happiness is palpable when he's with her!

  2. I thought exactly the same like you.
    Their chemistry is awesone.
I can't find any chemistry between Hoon and Jae Hee.
The actress who play Jae hee seem don't know how to show affection. She can't act properly. There is no chemistry between Hoon and her at all. I didn't watch this drama because of it.

  4. I just finished this movie. It was very frustrating. I really wanted that Dr. Park and Dr. Quack to be together. I saw that they have more chemistry than jae hee. Having relationship with Jae Hee is a burden to Dr. Park everytime they are together, suddenly become sad because of the conflicts. With Dr. Quack they are light to watch them. They are sweet to each other unlike with Jae Hee. Dr. Park used to think Jae Hee all the time which is not good for him because it cause troubles and hardships. Dr. Park and Dr. Quack is good together because they help grow each other.

    3. First time to watch this drama, but the chemistry between lee jung suk( park hoon) and kang sora( Dr. OH) is the most i want to end up with. Not jae hee cuz i cant feel any chemistry at all unlike dr. park hoon and dr. Oh. So i decided not to continue to the end of this drama. Its hurtful to me.

    4. To be precise,I just watched the film 2020, but the chemistry is park Hoon and oh Soo hyun,to be candid they fit both reality sef, even I searched the goggle to my foolishness,I searched about 30 minutes whether they date or so, but I figured nothing,๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ, Lee jong suk and Kang so ra all the way

    5. I agree with you. I like there relationship, it's just feel so pure and true. I'm not saying that his relationship with Jae Hee was otherwise, but the emotion, I can't feel it. I like his relationship with Dr. Oh better, it feels so right and calming. And I guess Dr. Oh was completely ignored on the last episodes, she did not get the explanation she deserves. I mean, at least they are colleague rather friends right? She's so charming, she deserves better in Dr. Stranger 2.

    6. Same here. So many people stuck in the same scenario like me. I know it is a good drama but i cant continue to watch it cause it Dr Oh and Park Hun wont end up with each other. They exude charm and such immense chemistry that i feel the plot is really pushy and awkward to put Jae Hee and Hun together in the end ๐Ÿ˜”

  5. This couple was my first second lead and the ending disappointed me because I thought that Jae Hee was a character from his past that he needed to get over and develop as a character then be with someone who was by his side. I loved Doctor Quack from their instant onscreen chemistry and I felt like the ending was weak- weak like you ask for some juice and get given a drop of cordial and a liter of water- Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it that much but I think it would have

  6. Just finished the drama just now. I felt not comfortable and satisfied with the ending.I think Soo Hyun is more attractive, I mean the character. For me Jae Hee not quite interesting(not the appereance) in how her act as to catch people heart. Soo Hyun is really nice and lot of humor in it, lovely, sweet and many more, while Jae Hee is err... maybe a little bit boring(or more) I think there is no part that makes me feel funny and attracted to her because most of the Jae Hee scene is too serious, humorless and she act just much more on Park Soon not to others like, she only talk more only to a few people( I mean low relationship with other) not friendly at all. So this is my opinion. Forever Quack <3

  8. I recently just watched the drama and some of my friends told me they didn't like the ending but I liked it. Maybe Jae hee and hoo don't have as much chemistry but considering what theyvth been through it would've been weird for hoon to end up with the other girl and I think they writers should've drawn a line between Dr.oh and hoon if the main couple was going to end up together that was a bad thing and I still haven't recovered from watching the king in love so this drama was a happy ending fo me. Damn the king in love still pisses me off why. Now that's a bad ending

    2. What Jae Hee suffered she looked for herself, it was not Park Hoon's business, but she involved him because they were supposed to be boyfriends and all that, but in fact not even at the beginning it is seen that Jae Hee wanted it from True because when he gave her the ring and all that she doubted.Secondly there is no chemistry sincerely when they are together she does not show affection or affection that it becomes boring, the one who really loves is only Dr. Park. Third, if in a hypothetical case he had not seen Jae Hee as they were taking her, surely the male protagonist would understand that he only got lost and did not see her again. It was preferable for him to stay with a new romance that would bring him his growth than to be a beggar because at the beginning I beg Jae Hee more all the ways that I pity him. They are honestly not a pretty couple

  9. I'm actually glad that hoon didn't end up with soo hyun. I didn't like the jae hee character very much, but considering the amount of history they have together, it only made sense to keep them together. Also Jae Hee was willing to do anything to keep hoon safe. But i thought Soo Hyun was not genuine either. She was clearly two timing with Jae Joon when she fell for Hoon, but didn't end it with Jae Joon early enough. That is just not right. Hoon is just a great character, and neither of the leading ladies hold a candle to him. Ha Ha.

  10. I totally agree! I expected Hoon and Dr. Quak would end up together and thought that jae hee would disappear so the 2 can have a happy life without any conflicts

  11. Ahhh now is 2020 but I just watched it. Nerve wrecking as I expect Quack couple to be together. Jae hee and hoon is more of a puppy love as there is a little chemistry between them they never portrayed what a real couple looks like but the chemistry between hoon and Soo hyun is actually more couple fitting the drama literally send a wrong signal to audience by misleading and misemphasise the role. The drama should be portrayed in different way if the ending was jaehee and hoon. Hoon intimate behaviour to Soo hyun by the role is too much. This causes the drama to not flow smoothly and ended in a unpredictable way. Just wasted the appearance and chemistry between Soo hyun and hoon

    1. I agree with you. It's really frustrating how they end up. I thought they will accept the past and move forward in the future. But they did not, they linger on their past, and that's what it makes not good ending for me. They should made it clear to viewers what they're intention, not stepping one step ahead and two steps backward.

  13. I feel the same. I just finished watching. The last 6,7 episodes I watched just because I already started it. I couldn't connect to this drama at all, Jae Hee and Hoon were such unnatural couple. The most of her act was like she has intestinal problems. I thought this will finally be the drama that gets over past, where people change. But nope...

  14. Omg I feel exactly the same I shipped Hoon and Soo Hyun so much till i got to episode 9, I was so disappointed. Like why build so much romantic relation between Hoon and Soo Hyun when it was going to stay unresolved, there was no need for that. If the writers were going to make Hoon and Jae Hee together they shouldn't have let the quack couple get so far. Us as the audience ended up liking and feeling more attached to Soo Hyun as a character more than Jae Hee. Yes, it would be weird if Jae Hee and Hoon didn't end up together because of what they've been through but thats not an excuse to build up so much romantic tension with another couple. Also what would've made sense is that they figure out Jae Hee actually died and then Hoon should've grown as a character and been with the person who was by his side (Soo Hyun) Also just to add on, the chemistry between Hoon and Jae Hee was very un-natural and felt awkward most of the time. Quack couple for life <3

  16. When i watched the first two episode. I really want jae hee and hoon to be together. I stop watching because of the quack couple. Bcoz im curious who will end up with hoon in the end i search on google. Thanks for the info now i have the reason to continue to watch it. I really love jae hee character. Not that two timer dr.oh, she already hv a bf and engage, they already kissed but still flirting with hoon, so disappointed how the script goes. They should not make a romance between hoon and that quack doctor, its so annoying to watch the two of them together.

  17. I just dropped this drama after knowing the quack couple won't end up together. I'm so very dissapointed at Park hoon for loving that jae hee. I can't see not even a bit of chemistry between that couple. The biggest flaw of this drama is that they never showed the stage of falling in love or starting to fall in love between park hoon and jae hee. While the quack couple grabbed my attention by their cute fights and even showed those simple moments of awkwardness when people seem to fall in love. I really don't like the character jae hee. They had no chemistry from the beginning tbh. Unfortunately i had to drop this drama.

  19. Tbh, right from the very beginning. I didnt really see the chemistry of Jae Hee and Hoon plus like what you've said, I agree that Jae Hee's portrayer haven't portrayed here character well, that's why when I met Soo Hyun, I really hoped that Hoon and her will end up together. Doctor Stranger showed more unforgettable memories Hoon and Soo Hyun had together! And those were...really unforgettable to me. Simple, but there was really smth. That was what I was looking for with Jae Hee and him, but there's none. Even them going to some place far, it feels nothing to me while watching. I have so much more to say too. Im glad I wasnt the only one to feel this way. Hoon and Soo Hyun - their ship may have failed to sail but still, Im om board for the both of them.

They just walked through straight line with little mystery and missed great chemistry between Oh Soo Hyun and Park Hoon.

  23. I know that this post is old but to new fans like me, LMAO NO. Soo Hyun's personality turned from a good strong woman to a stalkerish btchy whiny girl. Like have you seen the end of episode 16? She was rejected by Hoon but still went to his clinic/house a few days after, entered despite knowing Hoon is not there and went through his stuff. If that isn't a red flag then what is? I can understand that later on Soo Hyun accepts that she and Hoon cannot be together, but the moment she found out she's developing feelings for Hoon, she insists that she cannot stop those feelings. Let's be honest. If Soo Hyun really respects Hoon, she would have left him alone and not confess to him, especially knowing that Hoon's heart belongs to Jae Hee only. From the start Dr. Oh already understand the reason why Park Hoon is in desperate need of money, which is to look for his girlfriend that they believe is still in NK. Also, teasing and flirting is different. Park Hoon was only playfully teasing Dr. Oh, like what friends do to one another. It was Soo Hyun's fault that she developed feelings for Hoon despite knowing this. Also, Dr. Han and her were still in a relationship. It's a btch move if she developed feelings for Hoon while she didn't even ended their relationship. LMAO.

  24. I went on a kdrama kick and rewatching W got me looking up other Jong Suk dramas and I figured I'd start with his lower rated one (compared to Pinocchio and While You Were Sleeping).

I really went in hoping to ship Hoon and Jae Hee (bcs non-canon couples make my heart hurt for lack of a canon HEA), but from Ep 1 I was already worried that that was not gonna happen.

At first I thought it was because the drama didn't really give me time to like them as a couple before everything went wrong. Sure they had some cute moments; when baby-Hoon made the bracelet for her, and his proposal to her at school, but we really did go from 0-100 between these two scenes, and we definitely weren't getting much cutesy ship worthy moments when they were busy dodging bullets etc. To me the drama just didn't portray the development of the relationship in a way that would have endeared them to me. Like, if they expected me to blindly ship these characters, maybe give me some idea of what Hoon likes so much about Jae Hee, or why they were so compatible with each other, because all I really got from her was that she is a serious person. ALL THE TIME. Yes, later on we see Jae Hee willing to do anything for him, but the intensity and constant state of peril in their relationship really didn't help in leveling them up to something more than a two-dimensional relationship.

To me it felt like Hoon was always the one chasing after Jae Hee and in the beginning I just didn't catch the vibe that she reciprocated on the same level.

I definitely agree that the writers focused too much on holding the suspense of which girl Hoon would choose; by Ep 8 I was convinced that he'd end up with Soo Hyun. This meant that both she and Jae Hee got moments with Hoon, and with Jae Hee being somewhat of a stock-template soulmate, they unintentionally one-upped themselves with Soo Hyun. She felt like someone people would root for, and for all my disappointment in the writers for the ending, they did do a good job at giving her a personality, ie. insecurities, hopes (and idk, FEELINGS). Sure, she's not perfect, but at least she's likable.

    Just some of my thoughts.

  28. Just finished the series today and honestly, I ONLY TRIED TO FINISH IT BECAUSE I ACTUALLY THOUGHT THE QUACK COUPLE WILL END UP TOGETHER. Now i totally regret having watched it because my heart is so unhappy that he ended up with Jae Hee. I mean-- HOW CAN THE PRODUCERS EVEN TRY TO PUT IN THAT ANGLE AND BUILD UP SO MUCH HOPE, only to break our hearts in the end!? LOL!!! I hope the two of them get a project where they'd end up together instead!!! Their on-screen chemistry here was totally effective, i dont even know why!!!!! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก
